whats an apache server?

like when my internet gets slow in the lfe portal before it loads this:
Apache Server at www.lf-empire.de Port 80
shows...
I was just wondering what it is? (for my knowledge)

To my limited understanding, the Apache HTTP Server is a web server software that handles queries through the HTTP (the HyperText Transfer Protocol). The HTTP is just a "way" in which data is transferred from server to clients. (Think as: Clients ask questions and server responds with answers.) All the webpage data that is transferred when you browse the internet is mostly transferred through the HTTP.
Hiding users' signatures and avatars was the best decision ever.
