Don't know how it's with gimp but in Photoshop, you can dodge/burn highlights, midtones, and shadows separately. If there is such an option, you might want to try changing it ;)

:p sorry i answer late, but you can´t use ´´shading´´ tool, or any prof. tools in Gimp if your pic is already in bmp mode that lf2 uses.
You must copy the pic straight to Gimp from paint, like i say in tut, or you must have any .png file, put your pic over that pic and then put in to Gimp, and when you are ready just save it in bmp file.
Hope this is understanding able ^

That´s one big point i like in guides, even people who haven´t used the program earlier, can easily use it after seeing tut.

There is little more light and shading in this pic than in examples.
