@LutiChris : Exactly!!  You can see youtube videos about how to make an electromagnet. There are a lot of it. Generally electromagnets are more powerful than permanent magnets.Just use the correct core for the windings if you are going to make your own electromagnet instead of taking it from the transformer(The transformer already has the E-shaped core which provides the flux path).

So I think that should serve your purpose but just make sure about the range of magnet field.. Sorry couldn't help you with that..

Go to this link: http://www.explainthatstuff.com/magnetism.html the electromagnet heading explains it a bit. The last paragraph(under electromagnets) explains how to improve strength of electromagnet. Also for improved current use parallel batteries. http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/artic...igurations but i heard its risky.

@Bamboori : I don't think capacitors won't be of much use. There is magnetic flux as long as the current flows. While capacitors discharge within few Milli-seconds when connected in a circuit.

if you do get to building and running your electromagnet, i suggest that you be careful while using it as it could get really hot due to having a huge current running through it. also, i imagine for the size of the magnetic force you wanted (i could be overestimating), you'd need levels of current that may be dangerous to human touch. that is if you manage to acquire that much power

all the same, i wish you the best. not trying to deter you, just a heads up

if you have more questions, i could help because i learnt a bit about magnets from physics classes (i'm doing engineering)

I saw one in breaking bad episode.
maybe u can try electromagnet. i was see yr pic getting roasted :p (jk)
also, u can try one but are u strong enough to pick it?

maybe, u can find some of those usually in town junkyards, or u can try making an electromagnet.

i had a quick browse about that breaking bad electromagnet

http://www.wired.com/2012/07/breaking-ba...they-work/

judging by what i read in this blog, it seems...difficult...

though not as strong, electropermanent magnets wouldnt require a lot of electricity (you could even activate them per hand)
